Vollering holds off Pieterse to win Flèche Wallonne after late-race selection

Demi Vollering (FDJ United–Suez) held off a surging Puck Pieterse (Fenix–Premier Tech) to win La Flèche Wallonne, surviving a late challenge on the Mur de Huy to take victory in a dramatic uphill finish.

The race came to life in the final hour as the repeated climbs around Huy whittled the peloton down and set the stage for a selective finale.

Early aggression came from Uno-X, who sparked the first moves of the day. However, the peloton kept a tight leash on any breakaway attempts.

The Côte d’Ereffe proved the first major turning point. The 2.1-kilometer climb at 5% fractured the bunch, with around 20 riders forcing clear as the race began to split. Axelle Dubau-Prévot (EF Education–Oatly) led over the summit, but the damage behind was already evident as riders struggled to hold the pace.

Attrition continued across the climbs, with former Paris-Roubaix winner Alison Jackson among those distanced, while a crash involving Fisher-Black and Adege briefly disrupted the race before both Lidl-Trek riders remounted and rejoined.

As the race entered its final phase, a break featuring Dubau-Prévot and Katrine Aalerud dangled off the front, but their advantage steadily shrank. On the second passage of the Côte d’Ereffe, the gap was reduced to just 25 seconds as the peloton ramped up the pressure.

Everything came together on the Côte de Cherave, where the decisive selection was made. The steep 1.3-kilometer climb at 8.1% split the leaders’ group, dropping several contenders, including Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio. Elise Chabbey drove the pace inside the final kilometer, with Anna van der Breggen, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot and Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney among those holding position as the front group was reduced to 11 riders.

From there, it was all set for the final ascent of the Mur de Huy.

Vollering launched her move on the brutal slopes of the Mur, grinding clear as the gradient steepened. Pieterse mounted a late charge in the final meters, closing rapidly but ultimately falling just short as Vollering held on to claim victory at the line after almost four hours of tough racing.
