2026 Amstel Gold Race Results & Recap
2026 Amstel Gold Race is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
Beaten into third place in the race-deciding sprint last year that was won by Mattias Skjelmose (LTK), Remco Evenepoel (RBH) took revenge on his Danish rival to claim his first victory in the Amstel Gold Race.
The pair came into the finish well clear of their pursuers, with Skjelmose leading the way into the final few hundred meters. Evenepoel sat tight on his wheel until 175m out, when he accelerated hard on Skjelmose's right, his surge so fast and sustained that he quickly gained a winning gap and crossed the line several bike lengths clear.
Benoit Cosnefroy (UAD) won the sprint from a eight-man group for third place, ahead of French compatriot Romain Grégoire (GFC), with Emiel Verstrynge (APT) in fifth place.
Incredibly, on the back of that group was Marco Frigo (NSN), who was one of 9 riders who broke clear in the opening kilometers of the race. This group began to break up on the first of three ascents of the key climb of the Cauberg. Within a few kilometers, Frigo was on his own with just Huub Artz (LOI).
The critical action kicked off on the Gulperberg, with 47km to the finish. Frigo dropped Artz, while the peloton was thinned out by Red Bull's fast pace. On the next climb, the Kruisberg, Grégoire attacked, Evenepoel, Skjelmose, Kévin Vauquelin (IGD), Matteo Jorgenson (TVL) and Mathieu Burgaudeau following him.
On the subsequent descent, Vauquelin slid out on a damp left-hander, taking Jorgenson and the recently-caught Artz with him, while Burgaudeau was brought to a stop.
Evenepoel, Skjelmose and Grégoire caught Frigo on the 28th of the 33 climbs, the Fromberg. The Italian dropped back from the leaders on the next hill, the Keutenberg, which was followed by the second ascent of the Cauberg. Here, Grégoire slipped out of contention, leaving two up front.
Although Evenepoel pressed his rival over the final hills, Skjelmose held firm and both riders were happy to go to the line together, Skjelmose knowing that he'd beaten the Belgian 12 months earlier, Evenepoel confident that he could reverse that outcome. That confidence proved to be very well-placed.
