The hills of Limburg will once again take centre stage as the peloton descends on the south of the Netherlands for one of the most beloved classics on the spring calendar. With its relentless string of short, punchy climbs and a finale that has become one of the most tactically fascinating in all of cycling, the Amstel Gold Race offers something unique among the monuments and near-monuments of the cobbled and hilly classics season.

The route winds through the rolling landscape around Maastricht, threading together the familiar climbs that regulars will know by heart. The Cauberg, the Bemelerberg, the Kruisberg and of course the Waalse Pijl, whose very name hints at the race that follows just days later, all feature in a course that demands repeated efforts rather than a single defining mountain. Riders cannot simply survive and wait. They must be able to accelerate again and again over the course of a long afternoon, and when the decisive move comes, they must have enough left to contest a finish that can come down to millimetres.

The favourites will likely be drawn from the familiar group of punchy classics specialists and all-rounders who thrive in this kind of terrain. Those who have been performing well through the early cobbled classics will arrive with momentum, while the pure climbers who struggle over the wider bergs of Flanders sometimes find this hillier, more aerobic course more to their liking.

Tactically the race rarely reveals itself until deep into the final hour. Breakaways are tolerated and then hunted. The climbs come quickly enough toward the end that selection can happen suddenly, and the team with the most cards to play in the closing twenty kilometres often dictates proceedings. A rider who can follow every acceleration and still sprint at the end is the ideal Amstel winner, and those qualities are rare enough that the race remains genuinely difficult to call.

Weather in Limburg in April can be anything from mild spring sunshine to cold rain sweeping in off the flatlands, and conditions will play their part in shaping how boldly teams and individuals choose to race. A wet road on the Cauberg changes the risk calculation entirely.

Expect a race of attrition, surprise and the kind of tactical chess that makes the hillier classics so compelling. The Limburg hills have a way of sorting the field efficiently and honestly, and by the time the final climb of the day is crested, only the very best will be there to contest the honours.
