Philipsen Powers to Victory in Zaragoza Sprint
Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin–Deceuninck) was the fastest finisher on Stage 8 of La Vuelta, outsprinting Elia Viviani (Lotto Cycling Team) and Ethan Vernon (Israel–Premier Tech) after a tense run-in to Zaragoza. The Belgian crossed the line in 3:43:48, earning his first win of this year’s race and a valuable 10-second time bonus.
The 163.5-mile stage from Monzón Templario to Zaragoza was expected to end in a sprint, despite strong headwinds and crosswinds that slowed the peloton during the first hour. A three-man breakaway — Joan Bou (Caja Rural–Seguros RGA), Sergio Samitier (Cofidis), and José Luis Faura (Burgos–BH) — energized the early kilometers but never threatened to derail the sprinters’ chances. Their lead reached just over four minutes before Lidl–Trek, Alpecin–Deceuninck, and Lotto began a steady chase.
Racing into Aragon, local rider Sergio Samitier received cheers from his hometown of Barbastro as the break went through. “There’s a lot of excitement among my fans here,” Samitier said before the stage, though the group’s time out front ended with less than 20 kilometers remaining.
From there, the sprint trains took over. Lidl–Trek worked to set up green-jersey leader Mads Pedersen, who had already collected points earlier in the day, while Lotto and Alpecin–Deceuninck muscled for control in the final five kilometers. A flurry of late attacks — including a short-lived move from Joan Bou and Sergio Samitier — were quickly neutralized, setting up the drag-race finale.
In the closing kilometer, Lotto launched early, but Philipsen timed his sprint perfectly, surging past Viviani and Vernon to secure victory. Arne Marit (Intermarché–Wanty) and Anders Foldager (Jayco AlUla) rounded out the top five.
Torstein Træen (Bahrain Victorious) finished safely in the bunch to defend the red jersey, keeping his 2:33 advantage over Jonas Vingegaard (Visma–Lease a Bike). João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates XRG) remains third overall, eight seconds further back.
