Jay Vine Powers to Stage 6 Victory, Træen Takes Red in Andorra

Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates XRG) secured a commanding solo victory on Stage 6 of the Vuelta a España, the race’s first true mountain stage in the Pyrenees. The 171-kilometer route from Olot to Pal in Andorra included the Collada de Sentigosa, Collada de Toses, and a summit finish on Pal’s 9.6-kilometer climb, with an average grade of 6.3 percent.

Vine first showed his intent over the Alto de la Comella, earning maximum points before breaking away on the penultimate climb. He created a lead of over a minute during the wet descent and reached the lower slopes of Pal with a strong advantage. Despite the varying gradients splitting the chase, he maintained his lead to the finish line, securing his third career Vuelta stage win.

Behind, Torstein Træen (Bahrain Victorious) emerged as the strongest among Vine’s former teammates, crossing 54 seconds behind to finish second. The Norwegian’s effort was enough to put him in the overall lead, making him just the third rider from his country to wear red after Thor Hushovd (2006) and Odd Christian Eiking (2021). Bruno Armirail (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) and Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana Team) finished close behind to complete the top four.

The general classification favorites came in more than four minutes down, with João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates XRG) briefly attacking inside the final kilometer before being marked by Jonas Vingegaard, Giulio Ciccone, and others. Pre-race contender Juan Ayuso lost contact in the closing kilometers and ceded time.

At the end of the day, the provisional standings have Træen in the lead with a 31-second advantage over Armirail and just over a minute ahead of Fortunato. Vervaeke, Vingegaard, Almeida, and Ciccone remain close behind as they head into Stage 7, another challenging mountain stage ending in Cerler.
