UAE Team Emirates Takes Stage 5 TTT, Vingegaard Back in Red

UAE Team Emirates XRG powered to victory in the stage 5 team time trial of the Vuelta a España on Wednesday, edging out Team Visma | Lease a Bike and Lidl-Trek in a tightly contested battle against the clock.

The 24.1-kilometer course around Figueres was mostly flat with a gradual rise toward the line. The early benchmark time came from Lotto, who set a 25:53, then Q36.5, who impressed with Tom Pidcock helping his squad finish just 13 seconds behind Lotto, slotting them into provisional second after their effort.

“We knew if we put together a solid ride, we could limit our losses,” Pidcock said after Q36.5’s effort. “The last five kilometers were horrible — I kept missing the wheel — but I’m happy with how we did for such a young team.”

Lidl-Trek, led by Giulio Ciccone, Mads Pedersen, Daan Hoole and Søren Kragh Andersen, then raised the bar with an average of 56.5 km/h, completing the course in 25:35 and claimed the hot seat for quite some time.

Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe, Bahrain Victorious and Movistar all came close but could not unseat Lidl-Trek. Drama struck when Matteo Sobrero of Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe crashed in a corner, however, luckily, the rest of his teammates avoided the spill. Later, Israel Premier-Tech was delayed after being blocked by protesters.

Ineos Grenadiers, with Filippo Ganna powering the front, sped through the first checkpoint 10 seconds faster than Lidl-Trek and appeared set for the win. They eventually fell back, finishing fourth at 16 seconds behind UAE Team Emirates.

In the decisive finish, Marc Soler and Juan Ayuso led UAE Team Emirates to the line in 25:26, nine seconds faster than Lidl-Trek and seven seconds ahead of Visma. The victory gave the UAE team reason to celebrate, although Jonas Vingegaard regained the overall lead thanks to his team’s second-place performance.

At the finish, Vingegaard pulled on the red jersey, leading by eight seconds over Ayuso, Joao Almeida, and Soler, with Ciccone just one second further back.

With the team time trial complete, the Vuelta now turns to the mountains. Stage 6 covers 171 kilometers from Olot to Pal in Andorra, featuring the race’s first summit finish: a 9.7-kilometer climb averaging 6.4%.
