Vingegaard conquers Bola del Mundo to all but seal La Vuelta
Jonas Vingegaard (Visma–Lease a Bike) delivered a masterclass on the fearsome Bola del Mundo climb today, winning Stage 20 of the 2025 Vuelta a España and effectively locking up overall victory ahead of Sunday’s ceremonial finish in Madrid.
The 165.6-kilometre stage from Robledo de Chavela packed 4,226 metres of climbing and drama from the start. A massive 36-rider breakaway formed early, with repeated reshuffles over the Puerto de la Paradilla and the first ascent of the Puerto de Navacerrada. Attacks came from Egan Bernal, Giulio Ciccone, and Mikel Landa, while protests briefly slowed the peloton on the final approach.
On the decisive 12.3-kilometre ascent to Bola del Mundo—its final 3.2 km averaging a brutal 12.2 percent—Landa and Ciccone struck out first but were reeled in as the red-jersey group closed. With 2.5 km remaining, Jai Hindley (Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe) accelerated, drawing Vingegaard’s immediate response. The Danish champion countered with a searing move at 1.4 km to go and quickly opened daylight, powering to the line for his fifth career Vuelta stage win.
Sepp Kuss (Visma–Lease a Bike) finished second at +11 seconds, followed by Hindley at +13, Tom Pidcock (Q36.5) at +18 and João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) at +22.
