Bernal Wins Abbreviated Stage 16

Stage 16 was turned on its head by a late protest that blocked the road with 3 kilometres remaining, prompting race officials to neutralize the finale and take both the stage result and GC times at the 8-kilometre-to-go marker. By then, Egan Bernal and Mikel Landa had already distanced the break on the day’s climbs and, when the decision came over Radio Vuelta, the pair contested the decision point with Bernal kicking clear to claim the win in 3:35:10, just ahead of Landa.

Brieuc Rolland was next at seven seconds to cap a strong ride out of the move, while the next chasers—Nico Denz and Clément Braz Afonso—arrived a little over a minute down, followed by Bob Jungels, Kevin Vermaerke and Finlay Pickering. Sean Quinn and Rudy Molard closed out the leading survivors nearly three minutes behind the front.

The chaos behind didn’t alter the overall picture. Jonas Vingegaard kept La Roja on 61:16:35, still 48 seconds ahead of João Almeida. Tom Pidcock held third at 2:38, with Jai Hindley fourth and Matthew Riccitello up to fifth after another steady day. Giulio Pellizzari, Felix Gall, Sepp Kuss, Torstein Træen and William Junior Lecerf completed the top ten, all unchanged by the neutralized finish.

Organizers ultimately opted to bring team buses down to the riders rather than force the bunch through the blocked final kilometres
