The oldest classic on the cycling calendar returns once again, with Milano-Torino set to serve as a final tune-up for many of the riders eyeing glory at the following day's Il Lombardia. The race, which traces its origins back to 1876, may lack the prestige of its famous neighbour on the calendar, but it still attracts a quality field and offers a compelling course that rewards the pure climbers.

The route follows a familiar pattern, rolling through the Piedmontese countryside before the roads begin to kick upward in the closing kilometres. The finish atop the Basilica di Superga looms over the final act of the race, that brutal climb above Turin offering gradients that will shred apart any group that has survived together until that point. The Superga is not the longest or most savage climb in Italian cycling, but arriving at the end of a race in the legs, it is unforgiving enough to separate the genuine contenders from those merely going through the motions ahead of Lombardia.

Riders in fine late-season form will be the ones to watch. Those who have come out of the Giro dell'Emilia or the Tour of Lombardy build-up races with strong performances will carry momentum into this one. Climbers who thrive on steady, sustained ascents rather than explosive short punches will find the Superga suits their characteristics well.

The race often sees teams use it strategically, with some riders treating it as a full effort and others managing their energy with one eye on the following day. That tactical complexity can make the racing unpredictable, with breakaways sometimes succeeding when the bigger teams are reluctant to overextend their leaders. It would not be a surprise to see an opportunistic move from a rider further down the general pecking order succeed if the marquee names are content to watch one another.

Whatever the outcome, Milano-Torino provides a beautiful and historic backdrop to the close of the Italian classics season, and the view from Superga alone makes it worth watching.
