Skjelmose Wins Amstel Gold

Tadej Pogacar soloed at the front for many kilometers until Remco Evenepoel and Mattias Skjelmose overtook him within the final 8 kilometers. The Dane narrowly defeated the world champion in the sprint, while Evenepoel placed third.

Early in the race, the peloton split, leaving Tadej Pogacar in the second group. The gap reached half a minute, but the World Champion closed it near Adsteeg with help from a few teammates. It became the responsibility of the breakaway riders. Hartthijs de Vries and Jelle Johannink teamed up with Rémi Cavagna, Michel Hessmann, Robert Stannard, Emiel Verstrynge, Cedric Beullens, and Jarrad Drizners. The group of eight achieved a maximum lead of more than 4 minutes.

On the second climb of the Cauberg, the leading group was reduced to Johannink, Cavagna, Hessmann, and Beullens. Meanwhile, the peloton was rapidly closing in on them, and Beullens fell behind on the Geulhemmerberg. The other three were caught with 72 kilometers to go.

Julian Alaphilippe launched an assault on the Gulperberg, with Tadej Pogacar immediately following. The two gained a 10- second advantage before the world champion broke away alone on the Kruisberg. He reached the summit of the Eijserbosweg with a half- minute lead over the nearest pursuers, which remained steady until they reached the bottom of the Keutenberg.

As the Keutenberg leveled out, Mattias Skjelmose surged from the chase group, and Remco Evenepoel caught up with him just inside the last 25 kilometers.

On the Cauberg, they narrowed the gap to 14 seconds behind Pogacar, with the chasers not far behind. However, by the finish line, that gap widened to over half a minute again – eventually growing to a minute.

Evenepoel and Skjelmose closed in to 7 seconds behind the World Champion on the Bemelerberg. With 8 kilometers remaining, they made the catch.

The three riders stayed together until they hit the finishing straight. Evenepoel initiated the sprint from the front, but Pogacar surged ahead first, followed closely by Skjelmose. With one final effort, the Dane seized the victory.
