Course Preview
The Amstel Gold Race presents its familiar series of climbs, but this time, the Cauberg returns for the finale for the first time in nine years. Over 255.9 kilometers, the riders tackle 34 climbs, with the final ascent of the Cauberg just 2.5 kilometers from the finish line.
For many years, the Cauberg was the last climb in the Amstel Gold Race, but often, all action paused until that final ascent. However, since cycling has become much more dynamic since 2016, with riders attacking earlier, the organizers now dare to position the Cauberg later in the finale. Let’s see what that brings.
The essence of the race remains unchanged. It’s still a grueling contest filled with a dizzying number of climbs on the narrow roads of the hilly Zuid-Limburg region in southern Netherlands. It’s all about turning, twisting, and, consequently, positioning.
After starting in Maastricht, the peloton heads north out of the city. Just 12 kilometers in, the first small climb, the Maasberg, appears – setting the tone for the day. Throughout the race, the riders zigzag through the region, hopping from one short uphill kicker to the next.
The steepest climbs of the day emerge in the lead-up to the finale. Starting around 50 kilometers from the finish, the riders tackle the Gulperberg, Kruisberg, Eyserbosweg, and Fromberg within 11 kilometers. Shortly after, the Keuterberg ramps up with a brutal section at 22%. Another 10 kilometers down the road, the Cauberg adds 800 meters at 6.5%, with its steepest ramp reaching 12.8%.
The final lap measures 19.8 kilometers. After passing the finish line, the riders head for the Geulhemmerberg, a 1-kilometer climb at 5%, before navigating the narrow Kuitenbergweg to the Bemelerberg – 900 meters at 4.5%. From there, it’s over a twisting, narrow road towards the last ascent of the Cauberg.
It’s 2.5 flat kilometers from the top of the Cauberg to the finish line.
