Race Recap
Dunbar wins stage 20
Eddie Dunbar struck 5 kilometres from the summit of Picón Blanco. The Irishman overhauled attacker Pavel Sivakov and soloed to his second stage win in the Vuelta. Enric Mas finished second, with red jersey holder Primoz Roglic in third.
Kasper Asgreen was the first attacker, and Enzo Leijnse joined him. Jay Vine, Marco Frigo, and Harold Tejada took their place at the front in the run-up to the Estacas de Trueba ascent. Marc Soler, Pablo Castrillo, Clément Berthet, Sylvain Moniquet, Carlos Canal, Jack Haig, Enzo Leijnse, and Thomas Champion also made it across.
Leijnse waited for his teammate Max Poole before the two were swallowed by the peloton.
Vine won the KOM sprint at Las Estacas de Trueba, and also at the Puerto de la Braguía. The peloton trailed at six minutes at the Braguía.
The gap fell below 4 minutes on the Alto del Caracol, which inspired Soler to attack. Berthet went with him, while Vine bridged across before the summit to take the KOM points.
The leaders regrouped before the trio repeated the move on the Portillo de Lunada. Soler headed out alone with 9 kilometers to climb, while Frigo and Castrillo rejoined the other two 6 kilometers later. Soler reached the Lunada summit half a minute ahead of the four chasers before it came together in the valley.
Soler attacked again at the base of the Portillo de la Sia. He reached the summit 42 seconds ahead of Vine, and they were then level on points in the KOM competition.
A new regrouping took place in the valley before Soler and Castrillo lost contact on the early slopes of the Puerto de Los Tornos.
With just under 7 kilometres to the summit, the GC contenders – with the exception of Mattias Skjelmose and Carlos Rodriguez – catch the last breakaway riders, Vine and Berthet.
While Skjelmose regains contact, it is Pavel Sivakov who attacks from the GC group. The Frenchman is the first to reach the summit. Vine crosses the top in fourth place, securing his overall victory in the mountains classification.
Sivakov tackled the Picón Blanco 1 minute ahead of the red jersey group, while Eddie Dunbar attacked from the GC group with five kilometers to climb. The Irishman caught Sivakov 1.5 kilometres later.
Urko Berrade and David Gaudu opened the chase as well. Meanwhile, Dunbar dropped Sivakov, and Primoz Roglic, Enric Mas and Richard Carapaz rejoined Gaudu. Ben O’Connor and Felix Gall also made it back within the final kilometre.
Mas dropped his rivals in the final phase, but it was too late to threaten Dunbar’s triumph. Roglic finished 3 seconds behind Mas and retained the lead in the GC.
