The roads between Milan and Turin host one of cycling's oldest races, and the 2024 edition promises to deliver another compelling chapter in a competition that dates back to the nineteenth century. Milano-Torino serves as a traditional appetiser for Il Lombardia, sharing some of the same climbers and terrain philosophy, and this year's startlist reflects that connection with several major names using the race as a final tune-up before the Monument the following weekend.

The finish atop the Superga hill remains the decisive feature of the race. The climb to the basilica that overlooks Turin is not brutally steep but it is long enough to shed riders who are carrying any fatigue or whose form has not quite peaked, and it rewards pure climbers as well as punchy all-rounders who can produce a sustained effort after a full day in the saddle.

Tadej Pogacar arrives as the dominant force in the sport following a season of extraordinary achievements, and his presence alone reshapes how rivals approach the race tactically. The Slovenian has shown repeatedly in 2024 that he can win virtually any race he enters, and if his team controls the approach to Superga then it is difficult to imagine many riders being able to match him on the slopes.

However, the race distance and the positioning battles on the climb itself can create chaos and opportunity. Riders like Giulio Ciccone and Brandon McNulty will be looking to test themselves, while several classics specialists transitioning toward the hillier end of the calendar may also factor in. The atmosphere in the northern Italian autumn, with the Alps visible on a clear day and the anticipation of Lombardia building, makes this a genuinely special occasion on the cycling calendar.
