The 2023 Tour de Suisse arrives as one of the final major tune-up races before the Tour de France, and the startlist reflects that status perfectly. A collection of ambitious Grand Tour contenders will use the Swiss roads to sharpen their form, test their teams, and send a message to their rivals ahead of cycling's biggest event just weeks away.

The race spans eight stages across some of Switzerland's most demanding terrain, blending punchy uphill finishes with genuinely brutal mountain days that will sort the contenders from the pretenders. The overall classification battle promises to be fierce, with altitude and accumulated fatigue playing decisive roles as the week progresses.

Defending champion Geraint Thomas returns to the race with Ineos Grenadiers and will be among the favorites. The Welshman arrives in superb form and clearly has the Tour de France circled as his primary objective, but he is not the type of rider to simply cruise through a race of this caliber. His team provides him with the depth and tactical nous to control races and respond to attacks when it matters most.

Primoz Roglic represents perhaps the most compelling storyline heading into the week. The Slovenian powerhouse and his Jumbo-Visma squad have been dominant forces in stage racing, and Roglic himself is a former winner of this race. His climbing ability and time trial prowess make him a natural fit for a course that rewards both qualities.

The younger generation will also be eager to make their presence felt. Joao Almeida brings consistent high-end climbing form, while others like Brandon McNulty and Mattias Skjelmose could emerge as genuine threats if the race unfolds in ways that favor aggressive riding and breakaway attempts.

The mountainous finale stages will almost certainly decide the overall winner, but the time trial element ensures that pure climbers cannot simply dance away and hold their advantages without consequence. Riders who lose time against the clock will find it difficult to recover, meaning the balance of abilities across a full week becomes crucial.

Swiss cycling fans will be hoping for drama on the high passes, and given the quality of the field assembled, they are very likely to get exactly that.
