Vingegaard reigns supreme

Jonas Vingegaard (TJV) won today's uphill time trial in dominant fashion, obliterating Tadej Pogačar (UAD) by more than a minute and a half on the 22.4-kilometre course to Combloux, clocking a 32:36. The defending champion now leads the Tour de France by 1’48’’ ahead of Pogacar. Adam Yates joins his team-mate Pogacar in the top three overall.

"I was feeling great today," Vingegaard said. "This is the best time trial I’ve ever done. I’m proud of what I have done today and very happy about my victory. To be honest, I surprised myself with the time trial I did. I didn’t expect to do so well. We had split the ITT into four parts. I tried to go hard in the first climb, then recover downhill, hold back in the flat section, and go full gas in the fast climb while still keeping something for the final kilometres. I just had an incredible day. We had a pacing strategy and even when I was due to save energy, I was above the expected watt output.

"I haven’t won the Tour de France yet. There are some hard days to come, and I think the race isn’t over. I still have to do everything I can to keep the yellow jersey. The team has been amazing so far. I want to thank them. Everything we are doing in this Tour de France is part of a bigger plan that we are executing day by day."

Pogacar was visibly disappointed but remains hopeful for his GC chances in the upcoming mountains.

“I’m a bit surprised because I felt I was doing a solid TT," Pogacar said. "But at the end, the gap is big. At the beginning, I was following the times of Wout van Aert, and I was telling myself that I was on the right track because I was gaining time on him. Anyway, I gave it all. It’s not over because we have a very hard stage tomorrow. We’ll try to find a plan and execute it but for sure it’ll be hard to recover almost two minutes. Hopefully, I’ll bounce back like I did in the Pyrénées after losing time on Marie-Blanque.”
