Race Recap
Van Aert takes second win
Wout Van Aert (TJV) won his second stage of the Tour de France today on stage 8 when he came past Michael Matthews (BEX) right before the line in Lausanne. The Australian had to be content with another second place while yellow jersey, Tadej PogaÄŤar (UAD) finished third.
“In the intermediate sprint, there were only five points up for grab but it didn’t cost me any energy to go for it," van Aert said after the stage. "It would have been stupid not to try and I love to compete. It was my second time climbing to La Planche des Belles Filles with the gravel section at the end. I was already here in 2019, it’s really spectacular. As for myself, I hadn’t planned anything. At the end, I could enjoy the climb. I’ve seen many Belgian fans. Very quickly, we’ve seen that UAE Team Emirates was taking the race under their control, it meant that Pogacar was there for winning. He really wanted this stage and he made it. However, we have showed that we can challenge him with Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic in the mountains. So I still believe in the overall victory for Jumbo-Visma.”
Pogacar still leads the overall classification ahead of Jonas Vingegaard (TJV).
"I’m a bit disappointed to not win today because I was not far away," Pogacar said. "It was a very long and hot day with a lot of dangerous points. I kind of liked the last climb. I hesitated a bit in the last sprint and Van Aert passed me super fast, but the third place is still great. I’ve always liked sprinting. When I was younger I was the smallest so I always finished last in sprints, but now in a 5km long climb I can do good in sprinting, although not good enough to beat Michael Matthews and Wout van Aert. It wasn’t the plan to win today but since BikeExchange and Jumbo-Visma wanted to catch the breakaway, then it became another opportunity for us to go for the win so we tried. In the early crash, I hit the ground but not too much. It was nothing bad for me, I came back quickly.” \n
