Pogačar wins stage 6

Tadej Pogačar (UAD) won stage six of the Tour de France ahead of Michael Matthews (BEX) and David Gaudu (GFC). The Slovenian also takes over the yellow jersey.

“Every time I win it’s even better than before," Pogacar said. "It was such a hard day from the start. The first two hours were so crazy. The strongest guy was the in the break. Many teams were pulling the peloton strongly, our team did it as well. In the end, the peloton was stronger [than Van Aert] but we were not sure to catch him. I was feeling good. My team did an incredibly good job to put me in a perfect position. It was not a pure sprint after we rode the last two climbs above threshold. I guess I had good legs to push in the end. I don’t mind to take the yellow jersey but I’m above all happy to take the stage win. Everything else is bonus.”

Wout van Aert will take over the green jersey after spending the day in the breakaway with Quinn Simmons and Jacob Fuglsang, only to be caught on the last climb before the finish.

“For sure the yellow jersey is nicer than the green one but I’ve enjoyed the yellow and I’ll enjoy the green as well," van Aert said. "This morning, we’ve thought that on this very long stage we wouldn’t get much help to control the race, so the idea was to make the breakaway and it has been very difficult. At the end of the day, we were only three at the front, so I was well aware that it would be a mission to stay up there till the end. But I’ve wanted to honour the Maillot Jaune and share the moment with the crowd. I knew that those efforts would prevent me from fighting for the stage win. Now I will have another role. I’ll keep fighting for points for the green jersey and I’ll help my team-mates as much as I can. Tomorrow, I’ll work in the first part of the stage and I’ll take it easy in the hill to recover a bit.” \n
