The hills of Limburg are set to provide the perfect backdrop for one of cycling's most beloved spring classics as the Amstel Gold Race returns for another edition. The rolling terrain of the Dutch province, with its seemingly endless succession of short but punishing climbs, will once again sort the peloton and reward the riders best suited to this unique and demanding parcours.

The race covers roughly 260 kilometres and features an extraordinary number of climbs, with the Cauberg and the Bemelerberg among the most significant tests along the route. Unlike some of the more famous cobbled classics, Amstel rewards puncheurs and those with the ability to repeatedly accelerate out of the saddle on steep but short gradients rather than the pure climbers who excel in the mountains.

Among the favourites heading into the race, Mathieu van der Poel will carry enormous expectations on home soil. The Alpecin-Fenix star is one of the most explosive riders in the world and his ability to produce a devastating burst of speed on a climb or in a sprint from a reduced group makes him the man to beat on this terrain. Having finished on the podium in previous editions, he knows what it takes to succeed here.

Wout van Aert will also be a prominent figure, having shown remarkable form throughout the spring campaign. The Belgian all-rounder is equally capable of winning on terrain like this and will be looking to add another monument to his palmares.

Tom Pidcock, Alejandro Valverde, and Michael Matthews are among the wider group of contenders who could mount a serious challenge, while the climbers from the grand tour teams will hope the race is sufficiently broken apart to allow them to use their superior climbing legs. Tactics and timing will be everything when the final climbs come around.
