Race Recap
Van Aert wins penultimate stage
Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) pulled out all the stops to win the penultimate stage of the Tour de France - a 30.8km time trial - today in Saint-Émilion. The Belgian champion finished ahead of Kasper Asgreen and Jonas Vingegaard with a 35’53’’ at 51.5km/h, 21’’ faster than Asgreen.
"Winning an ITT in the Tour de France has always been one of the biggest goals of my career. I have been focused on this race in the last couple of days. I am very happy I have pulled it off. Comparing with the first ITT [of this Tour de France], this one was more rolling, and faster. With my weight, it was more to my advantage than the first one, which was punchier. It has been a perfect day. I was completely over-heated after the effort. It was stressful to see the rest riders coming to the finish. But, when I saw the intermediate times of the GC guys, I relaxed a bit. It was been a very hard Tour de France for my team. I am very proud of what we achieved, with three stage wins and Jonas placing second in the final GC."
Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) sealed his lead in the overall, only having to finish tomorrow on the Champs-Élysées, to officially claim the overall of the 108th edition. The Slovenian will finish in the lead of the overall, King of the Mountains and best young rider jersey tomorrow.
"I am super happy it is finished. Actually, it was a very fast ITT. There was so much support over the course. I was enjoying every kilometre, even if it was very hot and I was suffering a bit. I was going a flat-out, but it was different to the first ITT, on which there was more adrenaline, but I was well prepared anyway and it still was a super performance. I can’t compare both Tour de France GC victories. I can’t say which one is more beautiful. Last year everything was decided on the last ITT and the emotions were by far stronger. This time, I took the yellow jersey quite earlier. It has been totally different. Today I saw Allan [Peiper] for the first time since January. I was super happy to see him. It was already a lot of emotions before the start. It has been great to ride the ITT with his support, and the support of the team, my family, my friends… I will think about what this means in the future. For the moment, I am just very happy."\n
