'Superman' wins queen stage

Miguel Angel Lopez claimed the queen stage of the Tour de France on the col de la Loze after outclimbing breakaway companion Richard Carapaz.

“I’m very happy,” Lopez said. “I feel emotional because of the work done at home with my family, my wife, my son. I dedicate this victory to them. It hasn’t been easy to arrive where I am now. We were confident. I was on my terrain. At 2000 metres of altitude, I feel like at home. I took some advantage when I had to. It’s wonderful. The team did an excellent job from start to finish. Omar [Fraile] accompanied me, then it was a bit difficult for him but we’ve dreamt big and we never lost faith before fighting day after day. This stage win is the best way to celebrate the birthday of our boss Alexandre Vinokourov. I came to my first Tour with the primary goal to reach Paris. I’ll keep taking it day by day until the end.”

Primoz Roglic extended his lead in the overall competition, now leading Tadej Pogacar by 57 seconds after taking second on the stage.

"It was a good day for us, again in yellow, Roglic said. The start of the stage was very fast and we had to keep our focus on [so the race didn’t get out of control]. There are some big days to come. The team is doing a really good job so far, so we are ready and looking forward to the final days of the Tour de France. Tomorrow is this year’s queen stage. The final climb is the highest point of the route, and its last kilometres are very hard ones, as we have to ride a steep bike path. We’ve reckoned the climb - and I’ve also gone to the other side, the ski jumping hills in Courchevel. With 15 days on the legs, the terrain doesn’t matter that much. Flat, uphill - it’s the same. It’s about having the legs, and I hope to have them and do well tomorrow."\nPogacar, who is now leading the king of the mountain jersey and best young rider competition, finished third.

“I lost a few seconds,” Pogacar said. “It was very steep. I did my best and I’ve lost a bit of time on Lopez and Roglic but it’s not a bad day. And it’s not over yet. There’s another difficult stage tomorrow. It’ll be another hard battle. I can still lose my spot on the podium. Anyway, I’ll try until the end.”

At 30 km in, a group of 5 took off: Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step), Richard Carapaz (Ineos), Gorka Izagirre (Astana), Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Dan Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation). By the time they got to the col de la Madeleine, their lead was six minutes.

Bahrain-McLaren decided to take the bull by the horns today for Mikel Landa, and spent most of the climb on the front, and bringing the gap to the breakaway down to three minutes and 30 seconds. Kamna was the first to drop out of the break, while Carapaz crested La Madeleine first. \n \nOn the Loze, Alaphilippe cracked on the lower slopes of the 21.5km ascent leaving Carapaz and Izagirre with an advantage of two minutes. It didn’t take long before Carapaz’s accelerations left him at the front with nine kilometres to go.

Back in the yellow jersey group, the pace of Bahrain unseated everyone except for David De La Cruz (UAE Team Emirates), Lopez (Astana) and Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma), Roglic and Pogacar. Lopez attacked and caught Carapaz, and was unstoppable to the finish. Behind, Roglic followed and Pogacar tried his hardest to stay on his wheel, but the steep gradients at the finish got the better of the 21-year-old.
