Pinot is king on Tourmalet\nBy Clara Beard
Thibaut Pinot claimed his third stage win in the Tour de France in front of the French president Emmanuel Macron and the adoring French public. Previously winning at Porrentruy in 2012 and L’Alpe d’Huez in 2015 he once again showed his climbing legs atop Tourmalet, dominating the rest of the GC favorites in the final push to the line.
Another French superstar, Julian Alaphilippe, continued his campaign toward the yellow jersey in Paris, extending his lead in the overall competition after defending champion Geraint Thomas was dropped. Alaphilippe now leads Thomas by 2:02. Steven Kruijswijk put in a great ride to maintain his third place overall, 2:14 in arrears.
At the start in Tarbes, the Italian grand tour champion Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) was the first to attack, just moments after the flag dropped. Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) went with him. Behind the two fan favorites, a chase group of 15 formed and eventually caught Sagan and Nibali up the first categorized climb (Cat. 4).
The full list of breakaway riders included: Alexis Vuillermoz (AG2R-La Mondiale), Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Merida), Matthieu Ladagnous (Groupama-FDJ), Carlos Verona (Movistar), Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana), Sergio Henao (UAE Team Emirates), Lennard Kämna (Sunweb), Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal), Lilian Calmejane, Romain Sicard and Rein Taaramëe (Total Direct Energie), Ilnur Zakarin and Marco Haller (Katusha-Alpecin), Guillaume Martin (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and Elie Gesbert (Arkéa-Samsic).
Groupama-FDJ and Deceuninck-Quick Step set the pace in the peloton, allowing a gap of three minutes before the base of col du Soulor, the prelude to the Tourmalet.
It was on the Tourmalet where the action really started. First with an attack from Roman Sicard and his teammate, Simon Gesbert. Those challenges were reeled in and by the time there were five kilometres to go, just the GC favorites were left in the front group. Jumbo Visma took control for Kruijswijk, dropping Thomas and Quintana in the process.
All it took was an acceleration from Pinot with 250 metres to the line to show who was the strongest on the day. Others were left limiting their losses before the next mountain stage tomorrow. \n
