2017 Tour de Suisse Stage 9 Results & Recap
Stage 9 of the 2017 Tour de Suisse is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
What a dramatic day in the mountains as the 2017 Tour de Suisse delivered an unforgettable stage nine to close out this year's race. The riders faced a brutal final day with significant climbing on the menu, and the general classification contenders were forced to leave everything out on the road.
Chris Froome of Team Sky came into the final stage with the overall lead firmly in his sights, and the British champion rode with characteristic intelligence and composure throughout the day. His Sky teammates did an excellent job of controlling the peloton through the early mountain passes, setting a tempo that gradually wore away at the attacks from rivals looking to shake up the standings before the finish in Schaffhausen.
Richie Porte had been one of the most dangerous challengers throughout the week and continued to press Froome on the final climbs, but the Sky train proved too strong to crack in any decisive way. The Australian BMC rider showed his class and refused to simply concede, pushing hard whenever the road tilted upward.
As the race approached the finale, the overall standings were settled in Froome's favor, and he brought home the overall victory at the Tour de Suisse, giving him an enormous confidence boost ahead of the Tour de France just weeks away. It was a polished and commanding performance from the defending Tour de France champion, who leaves Switzerland in superb form and with his rivals well aware of the challenge that awaits them in July.
