Race Recap
Noemi Rüegg wins chaotic opener of Vuelta Femenina
The opening stage of La Vuelta Femenina delivered exactly what it promised: a punchy, unpredictable day that ended in a reduced bunch sprint with Noemi Ruegg coming out on top.
After a largely controlled opening over rolling Galician roads, with the peloton staying intact through the early climbs of the Alto do Cruceiro and Alto da Portela, the stage really got going inside the final 10 kilometers. Teams had been positioning for a selective sprint, with EF Education-Oatly and FDJ-Suez particularly eager as the race approached the intermediate sprint in Ponteareas and the uphill run-in to the finish.
The tension boiled over at 5.8 km to go when Marianne Vos and Sara Martín crashed, immediately ending their chances for a result. Moments later, the race fractured further, splitting into multiple groups as additional incidents disrupted the bunch. Vos was forced into a desperate chase between team cars, while Liv-AlUla-Jayco drove hard from a second peloton to limit losses.
Up front, a brief move formed with Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, Évita Muzic, Eva van Agt, Juliette Berthet and Sigrid Ytterhus Haugset gaining a small gap, but the combination of SD Worx-Protime and EF Education-Oatly shut it down inside the final 2 kilometers.
That set the stage for a sprint. SD Worx committed fully, with Mischa Bredewold launching Lotte Kopecky inside 500 meters to go. But Noemi Rüegg timed her effort perfectly, powering past the world champion in the final meters to take the biggest win of her career.
Franziska Koch rounded out the podium after a strong, consistent day at the front, continuing her impressive early-season form.
