Race Recap

Marc Soler won a wild, wind-ravaged opener today and pulled on the race leader's jersey in what turned out to be a very different day from the one anyone had planned. The stage was meant to be 178.5km from Cartagena to Yecla. It ended up being 83.5km from Fortuna — because the wind made the original route impassable.

Gusts battered the region from early morning, and the start was relocated before the peloton even clipped in. Once racing began, the crosswinds did their work almost immediately, tearing the bunch apart and making it impossible for any team to control events. Around 40km from the finish, a small group went clear containing Soler and his UAE teammate Julius Johansen, plus three Movistar riders — Raul García Pierna, Jefferson Cepeda and Juan Pedro López. UAE quickly asserted themselves and set the pace. On the uphill drag into Yecla, Soler moved clear of even his own companions, climbing with purpose and conviction to cross the line solo. Johansen was second, Tom Pidcock (Pinarello Q36.5) third in a tough day for the Q36.5 leader. UAE ended up with five riders in the top ten. "It wasn't easy with the wind. The team was incredible today," Soler said at the finish.
