Race Recap

At 20 years and 16 days old, Paul Seixas (DCT) became the youngest ever winner of Il Lombardia when he soloed to victory in the "Race of the Falling Leaves" following a devastating attack on the race's penultimate Civiglio climb. Vuelta winner Enric Mas (MOV) finished second, 48 seconds behind the young Frenchman, while Giulio Ciccone (LTK) rounded out the podium in his last outing in his team's jersey.

The race had been animated by a 14-rider breakaway group that opened up a lead of 3 minutes and 10 seconds and still held most of that advantage approaching the critical part of the race, which began with the ascent of the emblematic Madonna del Ghisallo.

The break split in two on the Ghisallo, Ben O'Connor (JAY) leading the way with Gijs Leemreize (TPP). Michael Leonard (EFE), Sylvain Moniquet (COF), George Bennett (NSN), Louis Vervaeke (SOQ), Fausto Masnada (MBH) and Julien Bernard (LTK) joined this pair, the eight of them crossing it with their lead reduced to 45 seconds.

The gap had been reduced by the pace-making of Giulio Pellizzari (RBH) and an attack near the top of the climb that featured Americans Matteo Jorgenson (TVL), Quinn Simmons (LTK) and world champion Brandon McNulty (UEX). The trio of US riders were reeled on the descent.

The break's lead rose again approaching the first of two ascents of the San Fermo della Battaglia climb, reaching 1'30" before Matthew Riccitello (DCT) led the bunch onto the first ramps, with Seixas right on his wheel. Pellizzari then took up the chase again, with Remco Evenepoel (RBH) tucked on his wheel.

Following that climb, the break, which had lost first Masnada and then Leemreize, went through the finish for the first time with its lead reduced to 40 seconds.

The six escapees were soon on the super steep Civiglio ascent, where Canadian Leonard went clear of his five companions. UAE Team Emirates XRG led the bunch onto the climb, but they were soon swept aside as Seixas went to the front.

The Frenchman didn't attack as such, he just kept pushing the pace faster and faster, soon passing the break and lone leader Leonard. Within moments, he had just Ciccone and Tom Pidcock (PQT) for company, but they quickly fell back too, the Briton overhauled by Mas, who joined up with Ciccone in a vain pursuit of Seixas.

Thirty seconds clear at the top of the climb, Seixas maintained that advantage on the descent, then pressed hard again the second time up San Fermo della Battaglia. He crested that 45 seconds clear of Mas, who had dropped the fading Ciccone.

The descent safely negotiated, Seixas had time to savour his first victory in the one-day Monuments, with more surely set to come given his age and precocious ability.
