The 2026 Volta ao Algarve opens the curtain to the European stage racing calendar with a strong startlist and a challenging route starting on Feb. 18, spanning five days in southern Portugal.
Juan Ayuso, Richard Carapaz, Thymen Arensman, Filippo Ganna and Julian Alaphilippe will launch their seasons on Portuguese roads, along with local legend João Almeida. Covering just under 700 kilometres from Wednesday through Sunday, the race combines sprint opportunities, a decisive individual time trial and two summit finishes, setting up a general classification battle that could hinge on small margins.
The opening stage to Tavira is expected to favour the sprinters, but it comes with an early twist. For the first time, the race will feature a Golden Kilometre on the cobbles in the city centre, where three bonus sprints are packed into a single kilometre. Those seconds could prove valuable later in the week, particularly in a race traditionally decided by narrow time gaps.
The first real test for the GC riders comes on the second day. The riders will start in the Serra de Monchique, culminating at Alto da Fóia. The climb rises for 7.4 kilometres at an average gradient of 5.6 percent, with the final 2.9 kilometres ramping up to 7.5 percent. It is an early opportunity for the climbers to assert themselves and establish a pecking order.
Stage three shifts the focus to the specialists with a 19.5-kilometre individual time trial in Vilamoura. The simple parcours should favour the pure power riders.
After another likely sprint opportunity between Albufeira and Lagos, where a 32-kilometre local circuit sets up a fast finish, the race concludes at the familiar slopes of Alto do Malhão in Loulé. The 2.6-kilometre ascent averages a demanding 9.3 percent, easing slightly in the final few hundred metres. This year, however, the climb will be tackled twice, which could potentially shake up the GC standings.
