Race Recap

With the high mountain stages beginning tomorrow, this always looked like being a stage that would favor a bunch sprint, and so it proved as Dorian Godon (IGD) surged clear of his rivals in the final straight to claim his second victory in three days and increase his lead at the top of the overall standings.

However, thanks to Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe and their leader Remco Evenepoel, this was anything but the straightforward bunch finish that was expected. Red Bull began to ride on the front of the bunch coming off the final categorized climb, the 3rd-act Coll Roig, hoping to take advantage of a gusting wind.

With 32km remaining, the route changed direction and the wind began to come across the peloton, which was right on the heels of the six breakaway riders, Lotto's Baptiste Veistroffer among them for the third day in a row. As the break was caught, Red Bull upped the pace another notch, their acceleration first lining out the bunch, then splitting it.

With several of his rivals caught out, Evenepoel went into flat-out time trial mode. With 28km to the finish, he powered off the front of the line, Jonas Vingegaard (TVL) the only rider able to bridge up to him. Sensing they could gain some time on other big names, the pair collaborated, building a lead of almost 30 seconds.

When the bunch began to re-form and cut their advantage, Vingegaard stopped cooperating with Evenepoel, who kept setting the pace on his own for a couple of kilometers, then eased off. Yet, when the wind began to blow from the side once again, the Belgian went back into TT mode, with Vingegaard still sitting on his wheel and refusing to come through.

Going into the final kilometer, the pair led by 9 seconds and it appeared that they would stay clear. However, as they approached a roundabout with 500m remaining, Evenepoel crashed. He was quickly up on his feet, his left elbow bloodied, but the chance of a wholly unexpected victory had gone.

Not wanting to take advantage of his rival's bad fortune, Vingegaard sat up and the sprinters were allowed their final fling, Godon finishing well clear of Ethan Vernon (NSN) after being led out by teammate Oscar Onley (IGD), while Noah Hobbs (EFE) was third.
