Course Preview
The riders tackle 2,252 metres of climbing over 159.5 kilometres on the third day of the Volta a Catalunya. The bulk of the climbing comes in the first half of the race.
Four years ago, stage 6 ran from Salou to Cambrils, and the start and finish towns of this stage are located nearby. Not only that, the route also bears ruite some resemblance to that one. After the start on the Costa Daurada, the riders tackle a hilly loop through the regions of Priorat, Baix Camp and Tarragonès, climbing the Montañas de Prades and Serra de Montsant along the way.
Back then, Richard Carapaz and Sergio Higuita attacked on the first climb of the day and held on all the way to the finish, where the Ecuadorian narrowly won the sprint. Higuita, however, could take consolation in the leader’s jersey, which he went on to win in that edition.
As was the case then, the riders cross the Coll de la Mussara (7.2 kilometres at 6%) and Coll de Capafons (4 kilometres at 4.5%) in the first half of the stage. In the second half the race continues through the same area, but this time the climbs are slightly less demanding, making the stage considerably easier overall. In total, there are almost 800 fewer metres of climbing.
After the descent of the final climb, Coll Roig (3.8 kilometres at 4.7%), the riders face a flat to gently rolling run-in of 35 kilometres. So yes, despite the mountainous opening phase, it could well come down to the (more resilient) sprinters. That said, there will be plenty of opportunists hoping to script a different outcome.
The first three riders across the line receive 10, 6 and 4 bonus seconds, while the intermediate sprints offer 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
