Race Recap
Without a Doubt, It's Wollaston\nBy Clara Beard
Ally Wollaston delivered a perfectly timed sprint to win Stage 1 of the women’s Santos Tour Down Under, capping a hard-fought opening day that came together only in the final few hundred metres.
The FDJ–Suez rider surged past long-time solo leader Alessia Vigilia (Uno-X Mobility) inside the final 300 metres, opening a decisive gap that no one could close. Wollaston crossed the line after 137.4 kilometres in 3:28:31, taking the stage win and a crucial 10-second time bonus ahead of Josie Nelson (Team Picnic Postnl) and Femke Gerritse (Team Sd Worx - Protime).
Vigilia was the only rider to animate the race, attacking early with just over 100 km to go and steadily building a lead that, at one point, exceeded three minutes. The Italian time trial specialist swept up all available queen of the mountains points on the two ascents of Willunga, securing the efex QOM jersey, and also contested intermediate sprints as the peloton gradually organized behind her.
FDJ–Suez took over the chase through Amber Kraak, who spent long stretches on the front as the kilometres ticked down. Other teams began to contribute in the final 40 km as the gap fell rapidly, particularly after the second intermediate sprint.
Inside the final five kilometres, tension spiked. A crash with around two kilometres to go briefly disrupted the run-in, and Vigilia still held around 30 seconds as the road dragged uphill toward the line. Uno-X Mobility riders tried to disrupt the chase, but the combined speed of the sprint teams proved too much.
With one kilometre remaining, the gap finally collapsed. Wollaston launched from the FDJ–Suez lead-out, sweeping past Vigilia and powering clear in the final metres. Josie Nelson (Team Picnic PostNL) finished second on the stage, while Femke Gerritse (SD Worx–Protime) took third, both also collecting bonus seconds.
Wollaston’s victory puts her into the ochre leader’s jersey, four seconds ahead of Nelson and five seconds clear of Olivia Baril (Movistar Team). Gerritse sits fourth at six seconds, with SD Worx teammate Marta Lach fifth overall.
After a record-long opening stage for the women’s race, the general classification remains close, with just 10 seconds covering the top 10 riders and bonus seconds already shaping the early hierarchy of the race.
