Matthew Brennan Wins TDU Finale

Visma Lease a Bike's Matthew Brennan capped off the Santos Tour Down Under in style, sprinting to victory on the final stage in Stirling as Jay Vine safely sealed the overall title. Brennan powered past Brady Gilmore (NSN) in the closing metres after a hard-fought uphill run to the line, while Vine finished securely in the bunch to confirm his GC win by 1:03 over Mauro Schmid (JAY), with Harrison Sweeny (EFE) completing the podium.

The closing stage was aggressive from the gun, with constant attacks as the riders tackled eight laps of the demanding Stirling circuit. Robert Stannard was one of the first to force the issue, and the breakaway continued to reshuffle through the early climbs as Pascal Eenkhoorn and Lucas Plapp animated the race and swept up intermediate sprint and KOM points. Despite building a healthy advantage at times, the move was never given full freedom, with UAE Team Emirates XRG, EF Education-EasyPost and Team Visma | Lease a Bike keeping the gap in check.

Drama struck midway through the stage when a kangaroo caused a crash in the peloton, briefly delaying race leader Jay Vine. The bunch sat up as Vine took a bike change and rejoined with Adam Yates, and once racing resumed in earnest, the pace immediately lifted. EF and Jayco AlUla drove hard on the front to protect their GC riders, while Visma steadily increased the pressure as the laps ticked down.

Everything came together on the final lap. Bahrain Victorious and Movistar tried to keep the break alive, but with five kilometres to go, the gap began to collapse rapidly. Team Visma | Lease a Bike took full control inside the final three kilometres, reeling in the last attackers before delivering Brennan perfectly positioned at the front. Gilmore jumped early on the rising finish, but Brennan came around him decisively to take the stage win on the final day.

Behind the sprint, Vine never looked under threat, following wheels and responding calmly as the road pitched up to the line. He crossed safely to lock up overall victory, while Schmid and Sweeny held onto second and third on general classification.
