Race Recap

Having said prior to the stage that he needed to be in the break and for the break to go the distance if he were to have any chance of beating Tadej Pogačar (UEX) to the stage win in Locarno, Romain Gregoire (GFC) executed that plan to perfection, sprinting clear of the remaining escapees in the final 250m to take his team's first WorldTour win of the season, a couple of bike lengths clear of Marcel Camprubí (PQT) in second and Bart Lemmen (TVL) in third.

After attacking on the final climb, Mathias Vacek (LTK) and race leader Pogačar came up just a few meters short in their pursuit of the escapees, crossing the line 4 seconds behind Grégoire. Pogačar did, though, extend his overall lead on Richard Carapaz (EFE) to almost 3 minutes after the Ecuadorean rider was unable to follow his attack on that climb.

There were more than 30km of attacks and chases before the break of the day went clear, 14 riders finding their way into the move, the best-placed of them Finlay Pickering (JAY), who was in 15th on GC, almost 5 minutes down on Pogačar.

The break gradually pushed its advantage out to almost 3 minutes with 50km remaining, at which point the UAE and EF Education teams began the pursuit in earnest, the latter set on defending Carapaz's second place that was threatened by Pickering.

Going onto the penultimate climb, the cat 3 Fanghi, with 18km remaining, the break's lead had been reduced to 2'15". Ewen Costiou (GFC) kept the pace high up front to keep Grégoire in with a shot at the stage win, while Pickering pressed hard in order to boost his chances of moving up the GC. At the summit, the 7 breakaways out front had a lead of 1'10".

At the foot of the final climb, the cat 3 Via Consiglio Mezzano, that gap has been reduced to 50" and it dropped even more when Jhonatan Narváez (UEX) attacked. As he wilted, Pogačar and Vacek took up the chase and went over the climb 33 seconds behind the leaders.

Their pursuit down the tight and technical descent and into the streets of Locarno was relentless. Coming into the final kilometer they had the escapees in their sights, but the 10-second gap proved unbridgeable.

Positioning going into the final 180-degree turn 300m from the finish was always likely to be critical, and Grégoire judged it perfectly. The Frenchman led into the corner, then sprinted hard out of it and was going clear of his rivals all of the way to the line.
