Course Preview
Stage 1 of the Tour de Romandie consists of several loops around Martigny. The 170.6-kilometre race features 1,985 metres of elevation gain, while the summit of the final and toughest climb — 8.9 kilometres at 9.8% — comes 33.8 kilometres from the finish.
The race opens with three 37.4-kilometre laps, each featuring the climb to La Rasse: 2.5 kilometres at 8%. This is also the only obstacle during this phase. The road runs mostly along the Rhône valley floor.
After the third passage of the finish line, the riders initially continue along the Rhône, this time heading northeast towards Ardon. There they begin the climb to Ovronnaz, a tough effort of 8.9 kilometres at an average gradient of 9.8%.
After crossing the mountain village, the riders descend back into the Rhône valley, and the final 22 kilometres are flat.
Five years ago, the Tour de Romandie last visited Martigny. Peter Sagan won the sprint ahead of Sonny Colbrelli and Patrick Bevin, although that came after a much easier lead-in without the climb to Ovronnaz.
The first three riders across the line receive 10, 6 and 4 bonus seconds.
