Course Preview

Extending to 208.8km, the 90th edition of Flèche Wallonne mixes some new terrain with the traditional focus on the Mur de Huy.

The race has a new start location in Herstal, on the eastern side of Liège. After heading north initially, the route turns south towards the first of 11 climbs, the Côte de Trasenster (31km covered, 3.3km at 8.1%).

From there, the course moves west towards the finishing circuit, crossing one of Liège-Bastogne-Liège’s regular hurdles, the Côte des Forges (40km, 1.3km at 7.8%), on the way.

At Modave (100.6km), the riders will reach what’s become the very familiar finishing circuit that’s covered two-and-a-half times and is based on the three climbs of the Côte d’Ereffe, the Côte de Cherave and the Mur de Huy.

The Ereffe (2.1km at 5%) is first up after 107.2km, followed 10km later by the Cherave, which is shorter but significantly steeper – 1.3km at 8.1%. From the top of the Cherave, the riders have just 4km into the foot of the Mur de Huy (1.3km at 9.6%).

After the first passage over the race’s emblematic finishing climb, there are 17km to the bottom of the Ereffe for the second time with Mur crossed again at the 170km mark.

The third lap is, of course, crucially different. The action will be intense as the favorites battle for position crossing the Ereffe for the third and final time. The intensity will go up another notch on the steep ramps of the Cherave and on the tricky descent that follows into Huy.

All that remains is the third and final ascent of the famous Mur, which is a very particular hill-climb test after more than 200km of racing. For those aiming for victory, it’s imperative to be near the front at the foot of the climb, but equally important to hold off on making the final effort until the brow of the hill is almost within sight.
