Demi Vollering Powers to Stage 5 victory in the Dolomites

Demi Vollering (FDJ United-Suez) claimed victory on Stage 5 of the Giro d'Italia Women after an explosive day in the Dolomites. The Dutch superstar outsprinted compatriot Anna van der Breggen (Team SD Worx-Protime) and Antonia Niedermaier (CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto) from a select lead group in Santo Stefano di Cadore, while Van der Breggen successfully defended the maglia rosa after surviving one of the hardest tests of the race so far.

Early attacks and splits in the peloton immediately put pressure on Van der Breggen, who found herself caught behind a split during the opening phase of racing. As the riders approached the first major climb of the day, Passo Tre Croci, a large breakaway group established a significant advantage.

Among the riders up the road were Lauren Dickson (FDJ United-Suez), Nadia Gontova (Liv-AlUla-Jayco), Valentina Cavallar (Team SD Worx-Protime), Lore De Schepper (AG Insurance-Soudal Team), Caroline Andersson (Liv-AlUla-Jayco) and several other strong climbers. At one point, the breakaway held more than four minutes over the pink jersey group and briefly threatened the overall standings.

The race began to come back together over the following climbs as the GC contenders took control. On the Passo di Sant'Antonio and the roads that followed, the favorites finally began attacking. Demi Vollering threw down some attacks, forcing the race apart and reducing the front group to the strongest climbers. Antonia Niedermaier impressed once again by matching the biggest names in the race, while Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ) struggled under the pressure and was left to limit her losses on GC.

The leading quartet entered the final descent together. Van der Breggen drove the pace downhill while Longo Borghini desperately chased from behind, limiting her losses to approximately 15 seconds by the finish.

Inside the final kilometer, Vollering launched her sprint and was strongest on the line, taking her first stage victory of this year's edition. Van der Breggen finished second, Niedermaier completed the podium and Holmgren crossed shortly afterward.
