Where to start with this stage, which will undoubtedly go down in the annals as one of the most memorable in the Giro's history? Let's start with the basic facts, that it was won by Igor Arrieta (UAD), who outsprinted breakaway companion Afonso Eulálio (TBV) in the final straight to take his maiden Grand Tour win, while his Portuguese rival received very ample compensation for that defeat in the form of the pink jersey as former race leader Giulio Ciccone (LTK) finished more than 7 minutes behind in a group containing the GC contenders.

Its beauty lay in the details that led to that head-to-head finale. It began with the ascent of a cat 3 climb, where there were numerous attacks and the rain that was forecast descended in torrents, creating muddy streams across the road and almost leading to the race being neutralized.

The breakaway began with an attack by Einer Rubio (MOV) and stage 2 winner Guillermo Silva (XAT). Eulálio bridged up to this pair followed by Victor Campenaerts and Gianmarco Garofoli (SOQ). With Rubio only 10 seconds off the race lead, the peloton remained in close contact, which allowed seven more riders to jump across to the front, including Arrieta, while Darren Rafferty bridged on his own later to make 13 up front.

As the rain continued to hammer down, the break pushed its lead out to 2'30", then had it trimmed back to 1'30". Approaching the cat 2 Montagna Grande Di Viggiano climb, it appeared that the peloton was intent on closing down that gap even more, which encouraged Arrieta to attack.

Eulálio bridged up to him on the climb, where the rain began to beat down heavily again, the dousing taking the steam from the peloton's pursuit, where caution and survival became the watchwords of the day.

40 seconds clear of Silva, Garofoli and Christian Scaroni (XAT) at the top of the climb with 50km remaining, Arrieta and Eulálio pushed their advantage out to 90 seconds 10km from home. Then came the final drama, and plenty of it...

Towards the bottom of the long descent into Potenza, Arrieta overcooked a switchback to the left and his bike slid away from him. By the time he'd got a new bike from his team car and was under way again, Silva had a lead of 30 seconds. Three kilometers later, Eulálio went down in similar fashion. By the time he was on his spare bike Arrieta was back with him.

Two kilometers from home, Arrieta misjudged another corner on a descent and went left when the route forked right. He circled back onto the correct road, got going once more, but was 10 seconds behind his rival with 1km to the line.

It seemed the stage was decided, but Eulálio began to flag on the drag up to the line. Seeing his quarry wilting, Arrieta powered back onto to his wheel with 100m left, then swept by to take the victory. To Eulálio went the pink jersey, with a lead of close to 3 minutes on Arrieta and more than 6 on the GC favorites.
