2026 Giro d'Italia Stage 20 Results & Recap
Stage 20 of the 2026 Giro d'Italia is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
Jonas Vingegaard (TVL) stands on the verge of becoming just the eighth rider to win all three Grand Tours after soloing to a fifth summit finish victory in this Giro d'Italia on the Piancavallo climb. The Dane attacked 11km from the line and quickly distanced his GC rivals, before going on to cross the line 1'15" ahead of Felix Gall (DCT), who outsprinted Jai Hindley (RBH) for second place, the pair just ahead of Derek Gee-West (LTK) and Thymen Arensman (IGD).
A few moments later, Afonso Eulálio crossed the line to secure the white jersey of best young rider after a ding-dong battle with Davide Piganzoli (TVL) on the final ascent.
Vingegaard had said before the stage that he was looking to win it, but that didn't quell the predictable frenzy of attacks from the start. Jonathan Milan (LTK) was prominent on a stage that passed through his home town of Buja early on, but he wasn't among the five who eventually made the cut.
Jack Haig (IGD) instigated the break with Jonas Geens (APT) and Thomas Silva (XAT), and they were soon joined by Andreas Leknessund (UXM) and Axel Huens (GFC).
As this quintet opened up a gap that reached 5'30", Larry Warbasse (TUD) and Manuele Tarozzi (BCS) spent more than 50km chasing around a minute behind them, before finally bridging up just in time to contest the intermediate sprint, which was won by Silva.
Tarozzi, Silva and Geens were dropped the first time up the Piancavallo, where the break's advantage was cut to little more than a minute by the summit as Victor Campenaerts (TVL) set a fierce pace on the front of the bunch.
Igor Arrieta (UAD) and Ludovico Crescioli jumped across to the break on the descent and the impetus they provided helped the leaders to reach the final climb with an advantage of two minutes.
After a flurry of attacks and counters from the breakaway group, Crescioli and Leknessund emerged as the front-runners, but the pair barely had time to think about whether to collaborate or attack each other before Vingegaard swept by.
As the race leader surged towards an inevitable victory, his rivals jostled for the positions beneath the peerless Dane in the general classification. Ultimately, the top 10 remained unchanged, with Gall and Hindley filling the podium positions below Vingegaard.
