Race Recap

Paul Magnier (SOQ) defied his pre-stage prediction and his sprint rivals as he clinched his third bunch sprint win of this race in Pieve di Soligo, finishing a bike length clear of Edoardo Zambanini (TBV), with Jonathan Milan (LTK) missing out again as he came in third. Magnier's victory lifted him back to the top of the points competition, with a healthy lead over Jhonatan Narváez (UAD).

Speaking moments before the stage, Magnier said he was focused on the final day's stage into Rome rather than the duel with Narváez, and was planning to spend this stage and the two that follow preserving all of the energy that he can for the very likely bunch sprint in the Italian capital on Sunday.

In fact, of the many scenarios that were being tossed around going into this stage, none featured the race's best sprinters as the protagonists. A breakaway win looked likely, and the battle to be in it raged from the start.

35km passed before the break of the day formed. It was instigated by Mattia Bais (PTV), who was immediately followed by teammate Andrea Mifsud. Another 25km passed before James Shaw (EFE) joined the Polti duo. Jonas Geens (APT) bridged up to them soon after.

By then, Lidl-Trek, NSN Cycling Team and UAE Team Emirates XRG were already controlling the bunch, apparently to set up their punchy finishers, Giulio Ciccone (LTK), Corbin Strong (NSN) and Narváez, respectively.

They let the gap go out to 2'15", before starting to chip away at it. With 23km remaining, three of the breakaways were reeled in, while Geens made a final solo effort that lasted almost until the foot of the short but steep Muro di Ca' del Poggio cat 4 climb, 11km from the finish.

Victim of a crash in the feed zone with 45km remaining, Afonso Eulálio (TBV) shook off the heavy knock to his left elbow he'd received and attacked near the foot of the climb, pink jersey Jonas Vingegaard overhauling him just before the cat 4 summit.

A group of 15 or so riders including most of the GC favorites went clear on the descent that followed. Johannes Kulset (UXM) attacked from this group and the all-action Eulálio joined him.

Soudal Quick-Step had good numbers in the second group and quickly closed to the Vingegaard group, before reeling in Kulset and Eulálio 1.3km from the line.

Going into the final 500m, Jasper Stuyven (SOQ) forced his way to the front with Magnier on his wheel. The Frenchman opened up his sprint 200m out and stayed upright and clear despite his back wheel slipping twice on the wet road to complete his hat-trick.
