Race Recap

Paul Magnier (SOQ) took the first Grand Tour win of his career when he overhauled Tobias Lund Andresen (DCT) on the drag up to the line in the Giro d'Italia opener in Burgas. Magnier finished almost a bike length clear of the Dane, as Ethan Vernon (NSN) took third place ahead of pre-stage favorite Jonathan Milan (LTK).

The finale was marred by a huge crash 600 meters from the finish. Numerous riders went down in the melee that occurred a dozen or so riders back in the line and completely blocked the road.

The chaos and Magnier's winning turn of speed came at the end of what had been a pretty humdrum stage. Manuele Tarozzi (BCS) and Diego Pablo Sevilla (PTV) attacked the moment the start flag dropped and no one made an attempt to chase after the pair on a day that was almost guaranteed to conclude with a bunch finish.

The leading duo quickly built up a lead of 2'15" and, despite some fluctuations in this advantage, managed to stay clear to contest both of the 4th-category ascents of the Cape Alagoni, plus the intermediate sprint and the Red Bull KM sprint.

Sevilla was the quicker on the climbs, bagging first place on both of them to take an early lead in the mountains competition. Tarozzi led through both sprints, the 6 bonus seconds he took at the latter putting him in third place overall at the end of the stage.

The breakaway pair were caught 22km from home, as the sprint teams began to gather their forces for the finale. Having contributed significantly to the pace-making in the bunch throughout the stage, Soudal Quick-Step always had Magnier well placed. After the pile-up 600m out, Dries Van Gestel (SOQ) and Jasper Stuyven (SOQ) were still up there with their French sprinter, and set him up perfectly for the contest with Lund Andresen.
