Race Recap

The 2025 UCI Road World Championships opened in Kigali, Rwanda, with a demanding 31.9-kilometer individual time trial that mixed steady power sections with cobbled climbs and sharp pitches. Switzerland’s Marlen Reusser mastered the technical, lumpy course to claim the first rainbow jersey of the week, delivering a dominant ride that stopped the clock at 43 minutes 09 seconds.

Early starters like Rwanda’s Xaveline Nirere and China’s Hao Zhang set the benchmarks, but the day belonged to the big names who rolled off late. Former world champion Anna van der Breggen of the Netherlands briefly held the hot seat with 44:01 before Reusser lit up the splits. The Swiss specialist was already 15 seconds quicker than Van der Breggen at the first time check (16:34.87) and extended her advantage at each intermediate. By the second checkpoint she was 28:06, comfortably ahead, and she powered through the final kilometre to lower the mark by nearly a full minute.

Dutch teammates Van der Breggen and Demi Vollering settled for silver and bronze, 51 and 1:04 down, respectively. Australia’s Brodie Chapman finished fourth (+1:20) and Norway’s Katrine Aalerud rounded out the top five (+1:24). Pre-race favourite Chloé Dygert of the United States, the 2019 champion, never factored into the medal fight on a course that rewarded sustained climbing power as much as pure speed.
