Race Recap

Magdeleine Vallieres made history in Rwanda by becoming the first Canadian rider ever to win the women’s elite road race world championship. The 22-year-old secured victory after 164.6 kilometres on the challenging Kigali circuit, attacking on the final cobbled climb and maintaining her lead all the way to the finish.

The early stages featured a solo move from Austria’s Carina Schrempf, who gained over three minutes before the peloton started to catch up. As the laps counted down, the tough Côte de Kigali Golf and Côte de Kimihurura climbs broke up the peloton, reducing the group at the front. In the last 40 kilometers, attacks came quickly, with riders like Blanka Vas, Juliette Labous, and Marlen Reusser trying to create gaps.

With just over 20 kilometres to go, Vallieres joined Niamh Fisher-Black and Maví Garcia at the head of the race, the trio quickly establishing a dangerous gap. Garcia briefly lost contact but clawed her way back, and it looked as though the medals would be decided among them. Behind, Élise Chabbey and Riejanne Markus led the chase but could not close the distance.

The decisive move came inside the final two kilometres. Vallieres surged clear on the cobbles, opening daylight on Fisher-Black while Garcia could do no more than hang on for bronze. The Canadian crossed the line alone in 4:34:48. Fisher-Black secured silver at 23 seconds, with Garcia taking bronze another four seconds back.

Chabbey was the strongest of the chasers in fourth, Markus came in fifth, and Antonia Niedermaier impressed with sixth. Pre-race favourite Demi Vollering had to settle for seventh, arriving in a group at 1:34 that also included Kimberley Le Court, Marlen Reusser and Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney.
