The spotlight shines on Kigali on Sunday as the men’s World Time Trial Championships bring a star-studded field to a demanding 40.6-kilometre course featuring 680 metres of climbing. Riders face four significant ascents, including the double passage of the Côte de Nyanza and the cobbled Côte de Kimihurara, with a sting in the tail: the road pitches up at more than 4% over the final 900 metres to the finish.

Defending champion and Olympic gold medallist Remco Evenepoel will roll down the start ramp last at 16:00 local time, carrying the weight of expectation as the man to beat. Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar, who starts at 15:57:30, is looking to translate his Grand Tour dominance into a rainbow jersey. Australia brings a potent duo in Jay Vine (15:50:00) and Luke Plapp (15:12:30), both capable of a medal on this lumpy, technical course. Switzerland’s Stefan Küng (15:55:00), a perennial contender and former European champion, is also a rider to watch, while Belgium’s Ilan Van Wilder and Italy’s Matteo Sobrero could also ride themselves onto the podium.

The day begins at 13:45 with Rwanda’s Shemu Nsengiyumva and unfolds in steady two-and-a-half-minute intervals. Among the early starters are riders representing emerging cycling nations—such as Apolinário Cá of Guinea-Bissau, Red Walters of Grenada, and Ricardo Sodjede of Benin—underscoring the ongoing global expansion of the sport.
