Race Recap

Stage 5 was an exceptionally flat day by Spanish standards, covering the Terres de l'Ebre region of southern Catalonia with only 1,320 metres of elevation gain — and most of that coming early in the stage. With the GC battle taking a breather, it was always going to be a day for the sprinters.

The only classified climb on the day was the Coll de la Font, a 7.3-kilometre ascent averaging 3.4%, with the summit sitting 142 kilometres from the finish. After that, the route was flat or mildly undulating all the way to Amposta, leaving wind as the main wildcard for disrupting a bunch sprint.

A small breakaway formed early, with the best-placed rider among them being Mikel Bizkarra of Euskaltel-Euskadi — over 20 minutes down in the GC — meaning the sprinters' teams had no reason to panic, and the peloton was content to let the move go before reeling it in later.

Visma-Lease a Bike came to the front to set up the sprint for their 19-year-old British rider Matthew Brennan, putting a lot of trust in the young sprinter. A crosswind-induced split caught some riders out, with those caught in the echelon losing 42 seconds to the front group.

Matthew Brennan delivered brilliantly for Visma-Lease a Bike, taking the stage win ahead of Tibor Del Grosso (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Pavel Bittner (Picnic-PostNL). Marijn van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) came fourth, with Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) rounding out the top five.

The stage win for Brennan had no impact on the overall standings at the top, and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) held the lead in the general classification, with Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) just one second back, and Enric Mas (Movistar) a further 20 seconds down in third.

A well-executed sprint finish in a largely uneventful stage, with Brennan cementing himself as one of the most exciting young sprinters in the peloton. The GC drama would resume in the days ahead.
