Course Preview
The 5th stage of the Volta a Catalunya is exceptionally flat by Spanish standards. The riders cover 172 kilometers between Paüls and Amposta, with only 1,320 meters of elevation gain. Moreover, most of this elevation occurs early in the stage.
Two years ago, the Volta a Catalunya traversed the Terres de l’Ebre region in southern Catalonia to reach a mountaintop finish in the Els Ports mountain range, where Primoz Roglic secured both a stage win and the overall victory at the expense of Remco Evenepoel. The race now returns to the Terres de l’Ebre but remains in the lower areas. In fact, there is only one classified climb to tackle: the Coll de Font, a 7.3-kilometer ascent averaging 3.4%. The summit is located 142 kilometers from the finish line, and the remainder of the route is flat or mildly undulating.
Wind is the sole factor that could disrupt a bunch sprint. As the peloton passes through the exposed Ebro Delta in the finale, crosswinds may come into play.
The first three riders to cross the finish line receive time bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints offer 3, 2, and 1 seconds.
