Dversnes Triumphs From Breakaway, Ganna Still Leader
In the 5th stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico, Fredrik Dversnes was among the early attackers. He headed out alone in the finale and had just enough left for the win, while Mathieu van der Poel took the sprint for second place. Filippo Ganna retained the leader's jersey.
Dries De Bondt was up for it, and he attacked in the run-up to the first climb of the day. He was joined by Manuele Tarozzi, Xandro Meurisse, Paul Ourselin, Gal Glivar, Francisco Muñoz, and Fredrik Dversnes. The seven opened up a 7-minute lead.
Muñoz and Meurisse were no longer with them as their companions tackled the final climb one minute earlier than the peloton. Dversnes distanced the others on the steep slopes, while Ben Healy couldn't follow the pace in the GC group.
The 27-year-old Norwegian still had a 15-second lead at the summit of the final climb, and as the chase didn't really take off, he was able to solo to the biggest victory of his career. A few seconds later, Mathieu van der Poel beat Roger Adrià in the sprint for second place.
Filippo Ganna retained the lead in the general classification.
