Kooij Wins Grueling Race, Ganna Still Leader
After the mountainous first part of the Tirreno-Adriatico's 4th stage, echelons came into play in the final 80 kilometres. All of this was too much for the pure sprinters, but the strongmen were still in the mix for the finale, in which Olav Kooij outpowered Rick Pluimers and Mathieu van der Poel.
There was no shortage of attacks on the climb from the start, the Forca della Civita, but they remained unsuccessful until just below the summit. Then, Roger Adrià attacked alongside Mark Donovan. The Brit couldn't keep up with the Spaniard and lost contact.
Both were caught, and then Gijs Leemreize set off with Valentin Ferron. On the descent, Dries De Bondt, Rui Costa, Lucas Hamilton, Damien Howson, Mirco Maestri, Rui Oliveira, Fredrik Dversnes, and Jonas Koch bridged the gap to the two. This attack didn't go too far, either.
Leemreize and Maestri didn't give up and go again, this time joined by Jonas Rutsch, Jorge Arcas, and William Blume Levy. That’s when it clicked, as they rode 6 minutes clear of the peloton.
Jonathan Milan and Dylan Groenewegen were dropped from the peloton on the Valico La Crocetta, while the five leaders reached the summit with a 3-minute lead. Strong winds on the plateau thereafter led to full-blown action and the formation of echelons. Simon Yates, Olav Kooij, Sam Bennett, Paul Magnier, and Derek Gee wound up in a chase group.
In the last 40 kilometres, the second group split again in another echelon alarm. Race leader Filippo Ganna, Laurens De Plus, Juan Ayuso, Isaac Del Toro, Felix Großschartner, and Quentin Pacher broke away from the rest, but the move was short-lived.
Rutsch hit the deck in the breakaway with 25 kilometers to go, while Mikel Landa lost contact in the first chase group due to a puncture.
The second chasing group regained contact with the peloton ahead just before entering the final lap. The breakaway was still half a minute clear at that point.
On a small climb just over 5 kilometres from the finish, Mathieu van der Poel attacked. Ben Healy and Filippo Ganna followed, after which the Irishman continues alone. He caught up with the two remaining leaders, Maestri and Blume Levy.
The peloton overtook the three in the last 500 metres, and then Olav Kooij popped up to power to victory, holding off Rick Pluimers and Mathieu van der Poel. Filippo Ganna finished seventh and retained the leader’s jersey.
