Third Time's Even More of a Charm for Pog

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates XRG) dropped Thomas Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) on the gravel of Colle Pinzuto with 18 kilometres to go and soloed to his second consecutive victory in Strade Bianche. Pidcock finished in second, followed by Tim Wellens in third.

Johan Price-Pejtersen, Stan Dewulf, Lewis Askey, Connor Swift, Simone Petilli, Albert Withen Philipsen, Mark Donovan, Pepijn Reinderink, Anders Foldager, and Fabian Weiss broke away in the run-up to the first sterrato, creating a five-minute gap.

On the sterrato of Monte Sante Marie, the gap fell below a minute. Only Askey, Swift, Donovan, Reinderink, and Weiss remained at the helm, while the peloton featured only six riders – Tadej Pogačar, Tom Pidcock, Isaac del Toro, Tim Wellens, Gianni Vermeersch, and Richard Carapaz – toward the end of the sector.

Then, Pidcock attacked, and Pogačar took over. With great effort, the Brit managed to stay on the wheel of the World Champion.

Swift saw the duo storm past him on the gravel, after which he regained contact on the tarmac. Pogačar missed a corner and hit the deck with 50 kilometres to go, forcing him to chase. Swift also lost contact and didn't make it back, whereas Pogačar did in the run-up to the Le Tolfe sector, partly because Pidcock slowed down.

Swift ended up in a chasing group with Tim Wellens, Pello Bilbao, Bean Healy, and Roger Adrià, a minute behind the two leaders. Pogačar made his move on the gravel of Colle Pinzuto. Pidcock paid the price, and shortly after, Wellens attacked from the chasing group.

The Slovenian left the final sterrato, Le Tolfe, behind with a one-minute lead over Pidcock. That was more than enough for his second consecutive victory in Strade Bianche. In doing so, he also matched record-holder Fabian Cancellara with a total of three wins.
