Pogacar solos to triumph
On the final ascent of the Oude Kwaremont, Tadej Pogacar dropped his fellow attackers Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert, Jasper Stuyven, and Mads Pedersen. In the rainbow jersey, he soloed to victory in the Tour of Flanders for the second time in his career. Pedersen outgunned Van der Poel in the sprint for second place.
The breakaway took shape after 35 kilometres of action. Victor Vercouillie, Elmar Reinders, Marco Haller, Alessandro Romele, Rory Townsend, Timo Roosen, Sean Flynn, and Connor Swift opened up a 4-minute gap
Midway through the race, top favourite Mathieu van der Poel hit the deck, and he was forced to chase. On the Eikenberg, the Dutchman regained contact with the rear of the bunch.
Davide Ballerini, Tiesj Benoot, Vito Braet and Stefan KĂĽng attacked from the peloton just after the Molenberg. Quinten Hermans set off in pursuit with the support of Matteo Trentin, Daan Hoole, and Filippo Ganna. The two chase groups came together with 92 kilometers left to race before they made the catch in the run-up to the Valkenberg.
When they hit the Oude Kwaremont for the second time, the breakaway’s gap to the peloton stood at 45 seconds. On the climb, Tadej Pogacar accelerated from the peloton, with Matteo Jorgenson and Wout van Aert glued to his wheel. Mathieu van der Poel and Mads Pedersen followed a little later.
Van der Poel and Pogacar crested the Paterberg with a small lead over the other three, while Pedersen was the first to make it back. Van Aert and Jorgenson regained contact later, with Stuyven in their wake. Arjen Livyns, Neilson Powless, and Yevgeniy Fedorov made it a chase group of nine.
As they tackled the final stretch of the Koppenberg, Van der Poel and PogaÄŤar bridged over to Ganna and Trentin. They caught the three remaining leaders, Benoot, Ballerini, and KĂĽng. Then, another regrouping took place.
Pogacar was the first to crest the Taaienberg, with Van der Poel and Pedersen on his wheel. On the next climb, the Oude Kruisberg, Pedersen lost contact, after which Van Aert and Stuyven joined him. The three of them rode back to the front of the race.
Van Aert attacked in the run-up to the Oude Kwaremont. He is caught when Pogacar attacked on the climb. The world champion reached the summit with a 12-second lead over the chasers, which was doubled at the last climb of the day, the Paterberg.
