Race Recap
Van der Poel Achieves Hat Trick at Hell of the North
Tadej Pogacar and Mathieu van der Poel were on the attack together when the world champion misjudged a corner with 38 kilometres to go. Despite this, the title holder pressed on solo and celebrated an incredible third consecutive win at Paris-Roubaix. Pogacar secured second place, while Mads Pedersen clinched a thrilling sprint for third, edging out Wout van Aert and Florian Vermeersch.
Just under 25 kilometres into the race, Abram Stockman, Kim Heiduk, Oier Lazkano, Markus Hoelgaard, Jonas Rutsch, Max Walker, Jasper De Buyst and Rory Townsend managed to break away, widening their gap to an impressive 3 minutes.
Moments before reaching the first cobbles, Jasper Stuyven and Jasper Philipsen both hit the ground. When they faced the cobbles, Filippo Ganna had to chase back after encountering a mechanical issue, but thanks to the peloton easing off, they comfortably rejoined the group with 129 kilometres left.
As they entered the Forest of Wallers, the lead of the breakaway group had dwindled to just half a minute. Exiting the forest, they watched as the favourites zoomed past, forming a front group of about 30 riders. Unfortunately for Wout van Aert and Stefan KĂĽng, they missed this crucial move and were now playing catch-up from behind.
Mathieu van der Poel continued pushing forward and led alongside Mads Pedersen, Stefan Bissegger, Jasper Philipsen, and Tadej Pogacar. Gradually, these five stretched their advantage over the first group of chasers, which included Wout van Aert, Stefan KĂĽng, Florian Vermeersch, Mike Teunissen, Joshua Tarling, Matthew Brennan, Tim van Dijke, Markus Hoelgaard, Jonas Rutsch and Abram Stockman.
Pogacar made a daring attack on the cobbles from Tilloy to Sars-et-Rosières. Pedersen unfortunately punctured, but Van der Poel surged to close the gap. Filippo Philipsen managed to bridge back once they hit the tarmac, with Pedersen and Bissegger also joining the chase.
By the time they reached Mons-en-Pévèle, the trio had extended their lead to 90 seconds — but then Philipsen faltered, leaving just Pogacar and Van der Poel battling ahead.
At sector 9, with 38 kilometres remaining, Pogacar missed a corner, allowing Van der Poel to charge forward and exit the cobbles with a 20-second lead over the world champion.
Pogacar narrowed the gap back down to 15 seconds, but then it widened once more. At 30 seconds, he switched bikes, but just like that, the distance stretched to 50.
As Van der Poel departed Carrefour de l’Arbre with a fabulous lead of 1 minute, he pressed on to win the Hell of the North for the third year running. Pogacar followed in second place, while Mads Pedersen out sprinted his rivals to claim third, finishing ahead of Van Aert and Vermeersch.
