Course Preview
The 7th stage of Paris-Nice features an elevation gain of 3,700 metres across a 137.8-kilometre route. Following three intermediate ascents, the final climb to the ski resort village of Auron extends for 7.3 kilometres at an average gradient of 7.2%.
Last year’s penultimate stage was set to conclude in Auron, but heavy snowfall compelled organisers to reroute to the Madone d’Utelle, where Aleksandr Vlasov soloed to victory.
This year’s attempt to reach Auron begins with 10 kilometres along the Var Valley before the riders tackle the Côte d’Aspremont – a 9-kilometre ascent at 5%. After a brief descent, the road gently climbs to Levens, then drops back down into the Var Valley. Shortly after, the peloton departs the Var Valley, heading into the Vésubie Valley. Following the river upstream at mild gradients for several kilometres, the riders arrive at Roquebillière, where the Côte de Belvédère commences. The 3.3-kilometre climb at 5.7% is a minor diversion as the riders descend back to the Vésubie Valley to continue the gentle uphill that ultimately leads to Saint-Martin-Vésubie, located at the foot of the Col de Saint-Martin.
The ski station of La Colmiane caps the Col de Saint-Martin. It’s a 7.5-kilometre climb with an average gradient of 7.1%. From the summit, the riders descend to Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée, where there remains over 30 kilometres to race. First, there's a gentle uphill towards Isola, which hosts the intermediate sprint, before the route continues in the same fashion to the base of the final climb.
The riders turn left, leaving the Tinée Valley to enter a 7.3-kilometre challenge with an average gradient of 7.2%. The early sections are significantly steeper, making the beginning of the ascent far tougher than that percentage indicates.
The first three riders at the finish line receive time bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint awards 6, 4, and 2 seconds.
