Course Preview
Stage 2 of Paris-Nice has a bunch sprint written all over it. Aside from a few minor climbs early on, the 183.9-kilometre route is as flat as they come. Echelons are really the one thing that could disrupt the sprinters’ plans.
Last year’s second stage was similar. Dutchman Arvid de Kleijn seized the opportunity to claim his first-ever WorldTour win, outsprinting Laurence Pithie and Dylan Groenewegen to the line.
The route features two third-category climbs in the first 55 kilometres. The Côte de Mesnuls is 1.2 kilometres at a 5.7% gradient, while the Côte de la Villeneuve is a 1.5-kilometre climb at 5%. After that, it’s smooth sailing on mostly flat roads.
The intermediate sprint occurs as the riders enter the final lap of 20.3 kilometres. It’s the perfect opportunity to assess the finish, as the intermediate sprint and finish line are in the exact same spot.
The last time Paris-Nice visited Bellegarde was in 2019, and it also ended in a sprint. That day, Dylan Groenewegen edged out Iván García and Philippe Gilbert to take the win.
The first three riders across the line earn time bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint offers 6, 4, and 2 seconds.
